You, the Living (2007)
When youโre even more Andersson than Wes Anderson.
Presentation:
Not the greatest Roy Andersson film, but perhaps the funniest. I donโt think Iโve ever burst out laughing like I did for this one. This leans heavier into the dark comedy making it more comparable to a Wes Anderson film. And I have to say, I think he completely schools Wes Anderson. Although Roy isnโt as commercial (ironic because he is known for commercial work), there is a cinematic gravitas to his films that make the images unforgettable. The quirkiness makes it one of his more charming films despite the increasingly sickly color palette.
Conclusion:
This is my 3rd favorite Roy Andersson film and the social commentary is much quirkier this time around. For cinephiles and lovers of cinema, you must watch at least one Roy Andersson film. It doesnโt really matter which one, though if I had to choose it would be A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence or Songs from the Second Floor. Even in suffering, what is life if you canโt laugh at it?
