Gattaca (1997)
Weโre more than the sum of our genes.
Presentation:
Though technically a sci-fi film, this story is primarily an inspiring drama for mankind. Despite a disability and genetic indicators pre-determining Ethan Hawkeโs capabilities, we have a beautiful script of pursing dreams against all odds in a genetically-engineered dystopian future. The grade is mostly monochromatic, yellow with a lower quality look, but it all blends together in the end as the narrative is the primary selling point here. Although some of the characters can feel glossed over, the script is compelling enough to make you root for them.
Conclusion:
Bias, discrimination, dystopian predictors, this film has some aspects of Minority Report but with no blockbuster tone. Itโs a captivating slow burn that should leave an impression on you. Especially in the world of AI and modern technology, the message and themes of this film feel more relevant than ever. There are lulls in the pacing but worth the reward at the end. Overcoming prejudice and our imperfections makes this one of the most humanist scripts. A simple idea, executed as a feature movie, it might be considered predictable by todayโs standards.
